History of FirstLight Federal Credit Union

FirstLight Federal Credit Union was founded in 1955 on Biggs Air force Base in order to give the military and civilian employees a place to take care of their financial needs. Originally known as Frontier Federal Credit Union, it merged with Fort Bliss Federal Credit Union not too long after its creation. This merger brought about another new name, with the credit union now being called Air Defense Center Federal Credit Union.

About 23 years later, credit unions started getting more popular and expanding the services that they offered, from the simple loan accounts to credit cards and mortgage loans. In order to compete, ADCFCU took on these financial goals and allowed itself to acquire a clientele that would make it a growing success.

During the 1980’s, ADCFCU was becoming extremely successful and was looked at as a model for how other credit unions should be operating. The NCUA would often call the management team at ADCFCU to see what tips they could provide to help other struggling credit unions.

Continuing with their current rate of progress, ADCFCU added more voice automated ATMs to their credit union locations, making life easier for their members. The financial institution also changed its back to Fort Bliss Federal Credit Union in 1990.

As soon as 2005 approached, the credit union changes its name again to FirstLight Federal Credit Union. This was done in order to show a commitment to a larger community, by having a name that appealed to a wider demographic.
